Founder of ProperMaison and a lifelong believer that the details of a space can completely change how it feels.
ProperMaison was founded in Belfast by Alyson McElroy in 2026, bringing together her experience in fashion, imagery, hospitality and beautifully considered living.
A life shaped by style, storytelling and hospitality
Long before ProperMaison, Alyson had developed an instinctive eye for presentation, balance and the small details that bring everything together.
Her career has included working within the fashion industry and as both a picture editor and journalist; roles that required creativity, precision and an ability to notice what others might overlook.
Whether selecting the right image, creating a particular mood or refining how something was presented, Alyson learned that the most memorable results are often created by the details that appear effortless.
That same philosophy now sits at the heart of ProperMaison.
Rustic elegance and the art of welcoming people
Between 2017 and 2024, Alyson lived with her family in France, where she owned and managed a boutique bistro bar in the Dordogne.
Each evening was thoughtfully curated, from the speciality menus and carefully chosen wines to the atmosphere in which they were enjoyed. Lovingly prepared food was served in surroundings of relaxed, rustic elegance, creating an experience that felt warm, personal and beautifully considered.
Life in France strengthened Alyson’s appreciation for hospitality, quality and the quiet luxury of things being done properly.
It was never simply about how something looked. It was about how people felt when they walked through the door.
Bringing a little French savoir-faire home to Belfast
After returning to Belfast with her family, Alyson brought those standards of care, presentation and hospitality home with her.
ProperMaison was created from the belief that a beautifully cared-for home can change how you feel. When a space is clean, calm, organised and thoughtfully prepared, it becomes easier to relax, welcome others and enjoy being there.
Alyson also recognised a need for a more thoughtful and personal kind of home support—particularly for people who value their independence but would benefit from a little regular help with the everyday details of running a home.
Many older people neither need nor want formal care. They may simply appreciate a familiar, trusted person who can keep the home beautifully clean, change fresh bed linen, help with laundry and light organisation, and notice when something around the home may need attention.
For their families, particularly those balancing work, children or distance, that regular visit can bring valuable reassurance. It means knowing that someone dependable is helping to keep everyday life comfortable, calm and manageable.
ProperMaison was created to offer that bespoke support: practical enough to make a real difference, personal enough to build trust and always delivered with care, discretion and respect.

Alyson approaches every home with care, discretion and respect for the person who lives there.
No two homes, clients or families are exactly the same. ProperMaison support is therefore shaped around the individual—what they are comfortable with, which household tasks would make life easier and how often they would like someone to visit.
The aim is not simply to complete a list of cleaning jobs. It is to develop a familiar, dependable service that helps the client continue enjoying their home and their independence.
That might mean regular cleaning, changing bed linen, taking care of laundry, light household organisation or simply noticing the everyday details that can become more difficult to manage over time. Where agreed with the client, ProperMaison can also provide a brief update to a nominated family member following a visit.
